Message from ABS President

Summer 2008

Dear ABS Members,

Here in mid-summer, we are all able to enjoy our wonderful bonsai. Some of
you are dealing with extra-ordinary wet or dry or hot weather that always
makes for extra challenges for bonsai growers.

While you work at keeping your bonsai in top condition, your board has been
hard at work for the organization. Here are some of the things going on:

ABS Learning Seminars 2008: Our Texas event was a great success both
educationally and financially for ABS. Thanks to the hard work of all
involved, especially Marty Klanijowski of San Antonio, the seminars provided
the best in learning and fun for all. Huge thanks to our partners: the Lone
Star Bonsai Federation, the San Antonio Bonsai Club and the Austin Bonsai
Club. ABS gives special thanks to Mike Hansen, member of the ABS board,
who represented ABS in the planning meetings for the event. See some of
the event at
http://absbonsai.org/gallery/ABS2008/. Dennis Howke, our
web master, board member, and photographer at the event, has put together
a beautiful scrap-book of the weekend.

ABS Learning Seminars 2009: Plans are now complete for the next set of
learning seminars in Boise Idaho. Check out all the fun and learning at
http://www.absbonsai.org/seminars/ABS2009/. Dennis Howke, his committee and the Boise Bonsai Society have planned a terrific event for all. In line with the new ABS policies to keep us all “in the black” financially, we have set up a cut off date to determine if the Boise event can afford to take place. We are asking that all members register for the event by Feb 25 if possible so that we can determine if we have enough people to support the event. If the event goes forward, then of course registrations will continue into June.
                                     SEE YOU IN BOISE!

ABS Learning Seminars 2011:
This will be the first of our every other
year format for scheduling events. George Buehler is chairing this event in
Louisville Kentucky. Partnering with the Louisville Bonsai Society and Bonsai
Clubs International will make this a world-wide event. Watch for details
after the Boise Event.

ABS Book Service: Under the watchful eye and with huge amounts of work
by George Buehler, our Book Service continues to be a great asset to our
members and our treasury. We appreciate your continued support. We still
have a number of the great North American Bonsai Book for sale. Consider
having your club sell the book and order in quantity to save some money.
Contact George at
absbookservice@insightbb.com. There are always new
books to check out at the site.

ABS Web Site: You are here. What more can I say? Dennis Howke has
done a terrific job making this a great bonsai site. Be sure to check it often
for all the new items.

Fund Raising via Estate Sales: Those of us reaching the upper levels of
the human life span often think about the future of our bonsai collections. I
personally had them written into my will with specific plans so that my family
would not be burdened with the collection. One possibility can be to donate
the collection to you favorite bonsai organization or organizations to be used
as a fund-raiser for them. The collection will then be cared for and the
bonsai will have new good homes while the organizations benefit. See “Bonsai
and Beyond” on this web site
http://www.absbonsai.org/21st.html for
details and ideas.

Currently ABS is hosting an estate sale from the collection of Captain
Rodolfo Serra of New Jersey. The over thirty year old collection was
donated to ABS by his son. We are selling the collection on line on this site
and in person. Currently the bonsai are being kept in my yard until they have
new homes.

If you wish to set up plans for your collection, contact an officer of the
organization involved.

ABS MEMBERSHIP: ABS needs more members to support our programs and
our wonderful Bonsai Journal. Ask some friends to join. Do a promotion at
your club. See details at
http://www.absbonsai.org/join/join.html

ABS Board of Directors: Are you someone who would like to work for ABS
in a more direct way? Do you know of a person who would be great for the
board? Contact ABS Secretary Pat Lucke Morris at
plmshomei@verizon.net.

As always, if you have any comments or ideas for us, please contact me.

SEE YOU IN BOISE!!!
